I love the "A Stitch in Time" series by Deanna Hall West for Piecework magazine.  Whenever I am in need of inspiration, I turn to A Stitch in Time online library.

Not only are there clear and precise stitch instructions with detailed diagrams, Deanna begins with a well-researched background on the stitch.

Today I fell in love with the Norwich Stitch.

Here's an excerpt from Norwich Stitch by Deanna Hall West:
The Norwich, waffle, southern cross or plaited interlaced stitch is considered to be a large, square, highly textured, modern-day canvas and needlepoint stitch.  It is composed of a raised diamond superimposed upon a stitched square.  Normally, it's worked over an uneven number of background threads.

I love the texture of this stitch and the lovely sampler Deanna has created. 

The center Norwich stitch uses a variegated thread.  If you prefer the "control" and symmetry of using solid colors, Deanna includes instructions for using three solid colors to make the "Tri-color Norwich Square."

Deanna used DMC threads, as well as Mill Hill beads.
