What is Throwsters Silk?

Throwsters Silk is unlike any other fiber on the market.

Reeled silk filaments are too fine to be woven "as is". The "throwster" takes several silk filaments, assembles and "throws" (twists) the silk to create a reeled silk yarn that has a substantial enough grist (thickness) for weaving or knitting.

However, when things go wrong in the throwing mill and fibers tangle around the machine or are otherwise unable to be used for finished yarns, the silk becomes "thrown silk waste" or "Throwsters Silk."

This is "degummed silk", but all reeled silks still have some sericin on the silk.

Throwsters silk can be handled in several ways to create textured or smooth, shiny yarns. It may be challenging to spin by itself, but lots of fun when blended in with other fibers.

The curly nature of this silk is a fun way to add texture and color to your spinning, mixed media, silk fusion or other fiber arts.
