Funky Silk Fibres
Carrier Silk Rods
These slit tubes are the by-product of reeling silk from the cocoon. The rods are 5 - 6" (13–15cm) long when whole and unscrunched; there may be some short pieces and partially wound cocoons in the mix.
They are wonderfully textural for stitching, silk fusion and any application needing depth. They can be pressed flat or pulled apart to reveal the interesting criss-cross of the fibres.
Silk Cocoon Strippings
These fibres look like slightly disorganised puffs of carded fibre which is the first silk extruded by the silkworm. It can be spun into fairly smooth yarn with a matte appearance. Or use it to add texture and colour to your collage and stitching works.
Degummed Throwsters Silk
A by-product of the twisting of filament in the reeled silk industry, it is unlike any other fibre on the market and an inexpensive source of high quality, long silk fibre. It can be handled in several ways to create textured or smooth, shiny yarns and can also be an inexpensive source of silk for blending.
Silk Hankies
Hankies (also known as mawata) are a ten inch square of silk fibre held together by a "selvedge." They can be used in silk fusion, needle felting, stitched onto fabric, spun into thread and more.
Silk Cocoons
The cocoon is the metamorphosis home of the silkworm. It is spun in one continuous thread almost a mile long. The cocoons vary in size. Most of them are an oval shape. They can be cut, dyed, painted and sewn.
At Treenway we cut and manipulate the quirky and colourful silk fibres to make earrings, flowers and tassels, create shapes, add texture and colour to silk fusion and other art works.
For ideas and examples, see what we've been doing here at Treenway!

The Funky Fibre Collection is now available in four colourways:
Apple Festival • Fall Fair • Saturday Market • Sea Capers
Our new colourways were inspired by four community events We were inspired to create four colourways for our funky silk fibres have had lots of fun assembling our funky fibres four colourways that are representative of some important community events that take place on Salt Spring Island.
Sea Capers is a celebration of our maritime tradition and a great show of community spirit and fun. Central to the event is a boat building contest. Participants arrive at the park with no more than $50 worth of materials (donated by one of our local building supply stores) and a collection of hand tools and build a sea worthy vessel of their own design in just three hours that can be sailed, paddled or otherwise manoeuvered through the water. The vessels themselves are full of fun and whimsy and are a great example of island ingenuity. The launching and sailing always prove great entertainment for onlookers as contestants attempt to travel 250m to a marker and back to shore. Blues, turquoises, greys and purples represent the fun of sea capers.
Apple Festival is organized by Captain Apple (Harry Burton) who, we are proud to say, lives here on Salt Spring Island. The first settlers arrived on the island in the late 1800s; they cleared the land and farmed and grew numerous varieties of apples. Many people still have a strong connection with the land and there is strong support of local organic food. During apple festival, farms around the island open their doors for all to come and tour, taste and buy apples. At Fulford Hall, there is a display of the 250 varieties of apples grown here and there is a delicious assortment of apple pies available for sale baked by volunteers. Reds, pinks, yellows greens and bark represent the crisp and tasty apple festival.
Saturday Market is an fun and fascinating destination for locals as well as the many people who visit Salt Spring. There is a fabulous selection of food including fresh bread (baked in an adobe oven), fresh goat and cow cheese, vacuum packed salmon, fruits and veggies of all kinds, fresh baked goodies, homemade chocolate and fresh flowers to brighten the table. We love good food and our farmers. A wander down the other side of the market provides a dizzying array of handmade arts and crafts ranging from hats, soaps, pottery, jewellery, lotions, clothes, paintings, books and wind chimes. Saturday Market provides a rainbow of primary colours.
Fall Fair is an event a rural community looks forward to all year. Vegetables, fruits, flowers, canned goods, quilts and much more are judged and hung with blue, red and white ribbons. Chickens, goats, llamas, sheep and other animals kindly put up with hordes of humans oohing, ahhing and reaching for a touch. Friends meet, get something yummy to eat from their favourite food stand and listen to fabulous music or watch the kids on the rides. Fall Fair is made up of harvest colours including oranges, burgundy, soft greens and earthy browns.
